A LIVING GUIDE TO TORONTO STREET ART

The wall is
a voice.

Street art holds memory, dissent, humour, pride, and the mark of the person who made it. Streetside helps Toronto look closer—and remember who spoke.

WHY GRAFFITI MATTERS

A city writes its history in public.

Graffiti can be a name, a challenge, a memorial, a joke, or a declaration that someone was here. Murals can gather a neighbourhood around a shared story. Both ask us to notice whose voices enter the public record.

Streetside keeps the connection between the work, its maker, and its place visible. We credit artists when they are known and leave room for work that is temporary, changing, or still being understood.

“Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing.”

TORONTO IS THE CANVAS

Many cultures.
Many hands.
One changing city.

From Graffiti Alley to walls across Toronto, street art carries the languages, histories, and creative energy of our neighbourhoods. The City's StreetARToronto program supports artists and the art that gives public spaces their character.

A LIVING ARCHIVE

The paint may disappear.
The meaning should not.

Walls are painted over. Letterforms evolve. Crews change. A piece may live for years or one night. Streetside keeps a respectful record of what stood there, when it was seen, and who made it.

Work first. Credit always. Technology only when it adds context.

FOR THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE WALL

The artist is
not a footnote.

Streetside aims to carry the artist's name, handle, collaborators, intent, and story with the work. Artists should be able to correct the record, shape how their work is presented, and decide whether a digital layer belongs there at all.

“I think a museum is a bad place to look at art.”

Streetside begins outside: with the wall, its surroundings, and the encounter you did not plan to have.
